Twin City

Minneapolis Steel & Machinery Co., Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

The Minneapolis Steel & Machinery Co. was formed in 1902. Early products included steam engines and bridges, but around 1912 they started to build tractors for other companies - first Case, and later Reeves and Bull. A the same time they also contracted the Joy-Willson Co. to design the first "Twin City" tractor, which subsequently grew into the Twin City 40. This tractor had a four-cylinder vertical engine (built by the MS&M Co.) and a large tubular radiator, and was joined a few years later by the Twin City 60, which had two extra cylinders and weighed in at around 14 tons. The product line was subsequently broadened with the addition of some smaller models, including the streamlined 16-30 model with its fully enclosed engine compartment. In the 1920s, the MS&M Co. introduced a completely new range of lightweight Twin City tractors that were to prove extremely popular and reliable. The well-engineered 12-20 and 20-35 (later re-rated to 17-28 and 27-44) had in-line four-cylinder vertical engines that were ahead of their time, and production of these tractors was to last for more than 15 years. By the end of the 1920s, however, the Minneapolis Steel & Machinery Co. was feeling the effects of competition from other manufacturers, and in 1929 they merged with several other companies to form the Minneapolis-Moline Power Implement Co. Minneapolis-Moline continued to build Twin City for several more years, and introduced a new range of models that carried the "MM-Twin City" designation, but the late 1930s saw a change of colour scheme from grey to yellow and the Twin City name vanished altogether.
