Walter C. Matteson was born in Stockton, California, and trained as a mechanic and designer in his father's agricultural engineering firm, the Matteson and Williamson Manufacturing Co. The company later became known as the Matteson Manufacturing Co., after which Walter Matteson developed his first tractor design - the Matteson "Flexo-Track-Tor". This was a full crawler tractor rated at 20-40hp and featured a unit-frame chassis with a four-cylinder Waukesha engine. A larger 35-70hp model was also proposed, but whether this was reached production is not known.
