The Caterpillar Tractor Co. was formed in 1925 by a merger between the Holt and Best companies, and was based in Peoria, Illinois. With the strong reputations and dealer networks established by both parent companies, success of the new venture was almost guaranteed. A range of "numbered" tractors such as the Ten, Twenty, Thirty etc. was introduced that drew heavily on earlier Holt and Best designs. Caterpillar also began to experiment with mounting a diesel engine on a crawler tractor, which went on to determine the future direction of the company and crawler tractors in general. Caterpillar later diversified to produce a whole range of construction equipment, and it is still going strong today in this field.
